Be still

My normal day begins with the walk from home to my study in our church’s building. If I go by the direct route through the park it takes only a few minutes. Often, I go by a longer route to get more exercise. We live in London’s most densely populated borough, Islington... Whichever route I take, I am used to it being busy and noisy with buses and cars, emergency vehicles and every kind of van and truck; there are planes and helicopters overhead; it is alive with people out and about on their daily business or taking children to school. But that is normally. It is anything but normal now. It is quiet on the streets, almost deserted, so quiet that we can hear birds singing all the time. It is as though someone has commanded, ‘Be still!’ and the world has obeyed. I am in awe at what God is doing. This is a moment to seek our good Lord with all our hearts – certainly, to cry out for mercy and relief for our suffering world, but surely also to pray for a mighty revival in the churches and for a great and gracious work of salvation in our communities. ‘Be still, and know that I am God’ (Psalm 46:10).
