The dawn chorus

Spring is such a beautiful time of the year. Yet, at the moment, we need to be staying inside as much as possible when outside the sun is shining, the sky is clear and the temperature so very pleasant. Let's not be fed up though, there is still plenty of 'outside' that we can enjoy while 'inside'. Around us are signs of life emerging after the winter, trees starting to go green and flowers growing. The dawn chorus is at its best with the birds in very good voice...

My normal day begins with the walk from home to my study in our church’s building. If I go by the direct route through the park it takes only a few minutes. Often, I go by a longer route to get more exercise. We live in London’s most densely populated borough, Islington...

God is sovereign over the whole universe, every molecule, every place and every moment. People are saying, ‘Where is God’ in these difficult times. The fact, at the same time both challenging and comforting, is that God is ‘where’ He always has been and always will be – God is there, everywhere, above all, before all, seeing all, hearing all and working always to accomplish everything He intends. He is sovereign over the whole universe and does whatever pleases Him...

Using our spare time wisely

It would be all too easy to bemoan what, for now, we can’t do in our spare time. Instead, let’s turn that sort of attitude on its head and give thought to what we can do. All of us need some ‘me-time’. We need to look after our physical and mental health. So, we might exercise at home and, if able, get out for a while for some fresh air. Yes, there will be plenty on offer to watch on TV and streaming or to listen to on the radio, but how about dusting off some books and reading? There is an opportunity to take up a new hobby or restart an old one...

The daily routine

We are creatures of habit. Our lives are built around routines. We get up and we go to bed; we have times in the day when we eat; we have daily jobs; there are trips out to the shops, or for exercise and a breath of fresh air, or to walk the dog; there are appointments in the diary. Our lives may be patterned by the ‘working week’, or school times, or visiting family and friends, or perhaps by the fixture list or a favourite series on TV. Even the most disorganised of folk still follow some form of routine, though to the outside observer it may not be obvious...
